Smith’s Autumn news 2015
It hardly seems possible that we are almost in November!
Time has simply flown by since we left Nottingham on April 3rd, having again been blessed by spending the winter there; renewing friendships and enjoying worship and teaching along with helping in the outreach teams of Trent Vineyard Church. We decided this summer we would travel as much of the northern waterways of England as possible. To this end we cruised mainly on rivers for the first two months, so encountered few boaters, as they tend not to stay on rivers because of the risk of the rise and fall of water levels along with lack of suitable moorings.
We cruised across the Pennines – such beautiful scenery. Truly God is awesome in His creation! We continued on to Barnoldswick, where we had the great privilege of speaking to folk about the work of God, through Canal Ministries, during a ‘Pie & Peas’ Supper on a canal boat trip event, organised by the Gospel Mission Church there. Later that same week we spoke to folk at their monthly Soup lunch, which is run by the church and we also were delighted to be able to share with their children’s weekly group – who were very interested in the boat. We are thankful to all who helped make the week such a delight!
Moving on from there we came eventually to Liverpool, where we were pleased to meet up with our previous minister from Bude in Cornwall. He kindly allowed us to share about the work of Canal Ministries at the church service he was leading on the Sunday morning. God is so good.
We were also invited to share testimonies of God’s work on the canals at two other churches this summer. How wonderful it is to share the amazing reality and truth of Jesus so freely.
Before we knew it we had completed the canals and rivers of the north and began to head south from the middle of September. Once, we moored up and met 3 gentlemen one of whom was homeless and without food. So naturally, we gave him some along with a ‘Why Jesus?’ by Nicky Gumbel, of which, his friend asked for one as well! Praise the Lord!
During our travels this summer, we have met up with various Christian boaters whom we have met on other parts of the inland waterways, in previous years. It is a joy to hear how God has been working in their lives and keeping them in Himself, for truly we are all ‘His workmanship’. Ephesians 2:10.
We are now in London, where we shall spend a few days. On Sunday we visited a church that we were at four years ago. The message was on the Ten Commandments – very encouraging. We are travelling tomorrow to Brentford before we cruise out onto the river Thames, heading for Reading, in order to pick up the Kennet and Avon canal, which will bring us down to Devizes for the winter.
PRAYER REQUEST: Please pray for opportunities for us and the Canal Ministries team to share the gospel of Jesus Christ through whatever means God gives us.
Pray for God’s Divine hedge of protection around all members of the team and trustees.
Pray that we would be salt and light to all we meet.
We conclude this news round, with our prayer for you and ourselves which echo’s that of Paul’s prayer in Ephesians chapter 3; Indeed, we pray that out of his glorious riches our God, Father Son and Holy Spirit may strengthen us all with power through His Spirit in our inner being so that Christ may dwell in our hearts by faith and we pray that all of us being rooted and established in love may have the power together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that we may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Amen!
Finally with Paul we say: ‘Now to Him who is able to do immeasurable more that all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.’ (Ephesians 3:20)
Yours in Christ Jesus our Saviour and Lord,
Sue and Andy Smith
