Carole and I moved up to live in the North-west of England in 2011, buying a cottage in the village of Milnthorpe with winter use in mind, but allowing us to concentrate on our boating activities in Summer on the Lancaster Canal and the Northwest where there still is little explicit Christian waterways witness.
Our move away from full-time living aboard was made after much prayer. We had had to realise that age was catching up with us. However, though we are part- time boaters now, we have never lost our love for boaters and boating on our inland waterways, nor lost our commitment to Boaters' Christian Fellowship and Canal Ministries. Our boat is now moored at Garstang Marina, between Preston and Lancaster, and we are slowly making friends and contacts with fellow moorers.
One of the lessons we learned from Canal Ministries is the wisdom of earning the right to speak about the Lordship of Jesus. It is one thing to take every opportunity, but another to convey the Gospel in the grace and love of the Lord. Our role as Chaplains with Canal Ministries has so far combined well with our membership and occasional availability to Waterways Chaplaincy. We’ve still been actively involved in occasional chaplaincy work, including using local foodbanks from time to time.
Our trip to Liverpool Docks was great and we were also able to contribute to the Preston Gala!
We have managed to maintain an active participation in and prayer for Canal Ministry Missions as they have come and gone, but are sometimes painfully aware that, as with everything else we do, the clock continues to tick… and Days of Elijah needs more maintenance and care than we can now give her.
So, in brief, we are wonderfully blessed by the loveliness of the Lake District here on hand, but we still very much miss the quality of fellowship in the Lord that was and still is such a vital part of Christian boating.
Meantime, you are most welcome to get in touch if you are anywhere near us.
